What is the Alexander Technique?
The Alexander Technique is a practical approach for self-care, self-awareness and performance improvement. It involves learning to change unhelpful habits of mind and body in a very gentle way without force or effort. You learn how to release unwanted physical tension to restore natural poise, balance, coordination and ease of movement.
Using the Alexander Technique on a daily basis enables your mind and body to function effectively together. It can make a difference in everything you do, improving posture, relieving pain and discomfort, helping you to keep active, enhancing performance, building confidence and improving your health and wellbeing.
You can learn the Alexander Technique in a one-to-one lesson or with a group. In a one-to-one Alexander Technique lesson, the teacher explains and guides you to make changes to the way that you move and rest. The teacher uses their hands to direct your awareness and give gentle feedback on your postural habits and movement patterns. There is no manipulation or therapy. In a group session there is a mixture of discussion and practical, fun activities in pairs or small groups. Groups are friendly and supportive.
This unique approach involves active participation as you learn how to use your body and mind in a different way, without force or strain. Bringing the Alexander Technique into your daily activities can restore a sense of wellbeing, calm and ease in your life.
